Broomsweeps (Sayings)
There a few of the pertinent sayings-I call them “Broom Sweeps” (because
of the “broom”) that are reminders about the intention of goodness in sports. Many more in the book.
- Excellence is good; exemplary is better.
- You gotta get the corners.
- Don’t be afraid of the broom.
- There’s a reason for everything.
- Don’t give up.
- It just shows what perseverance gets you when you believe in each other.
- Quit. There’s no “quit” in my dictionary.
- When you lose focus on what you’re doing, it’s no good.
- Don’t panic. Whatever you do, don’t panic.
- The possibilities always lie ahead of you, not behind you.
- My attitude was “just give me an opportunity. I’ll work for it.”
- Dance in the end zone? This is a game of respect, and we shouldn’t belittle each other.
- Did I leave this game better?
- Being on time is a unifying factor.
- Be on time. No excuses. No exceptions.
- You must think of yourself as a winner now!
- Always do the right thing.
- Talk to your players (kids-employees) not at them.
- Play fast, play hard, play smart.
- Practice doesn’t make perfect; only perfect practice makes perfect.

- The mind by its very nature is a goal-setting machine.
- Most of us die with our music still in us.
- You play for the logo on your helmet, not the name on the back of your jersey.
- When you are doing the right thing, good things will happen.
- People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
- We play to win the game.
- I think you need to learn how to handle losing before you can win.
- Keep hope alive.
- Attitude: Thoughts of the heart.
- Character is what you do when nobody’s watching
- Sportsmanship is what you do when everybody’s watching.
- And so it was an Afro-American, who as a kid shined soldier’s shoes at Ft. Ord for 35 cents, was now the Head Coach of the New York Jets.

Herm lives his life that way.
